Amber Rubarth's COVER CROP MUSIC
Founded by internationally recognized musician, songwriter and producer Amber Rubarth, Cover Crop Music provides community offerings to nourish and deepen people's connection with their local environments through song and story in an immersive experience.
In March 2020, as touring came to a halt, Rubarth began volunteering on a nearby organic farm and became fascinated learning about cover crops - specifically a farmer’s knowledge that we can’t seed and harvest without depleting the soil, and so cover crops are planted as an offering to nourish, protect and enrich the soil that feeds us. This concept of generosity to environment inspired Cover Crop, a collection of 15 reinterpreted songs around the disconnection and remembrance of our interconnectivity with nature, self-produced and performed alone at Rubarth's home in the woods of New York. In the spirit of offering and sustainability she partnered with the Hudson Valley Seed Co. to create cover crop seed packet album giveaways for the community rather than printing CDs or Vinyl. Around the same time, she co-produced a double-album of 24 artists’ songs exploring the wisdom of nature beneath our feet for the documentary Fantastic Fungi, alongside an online series connecting musicians, environmentalists, and scientists in conversations around sustainability.
Funding supports Cover Crop Music events - immersive community offerings connecting musicians with local farms, providing seeds and CSA food, and creating deeper conversation around sustainability through the lens of planting cover crops, and “giving back to the soil that feeds us.”
